In the context of our european eTwinning program "There and Back Again: A Space Tale", our schools had the pleasure and honor to collaborate with the professor of the Department of Astrophysics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Dr. Vlachos Loukas, who followed the course of our work throughout the school year, participated in an online meeting with the students where he spoke to them about the history of space missions from 1942 until today, he explained to them the reasons why the scientific community is interested in opening a new cycle of missions to the moon and Mars through the ARTEMIS program, as well as targeting the creation of permanent lunar bases.
On Tuesday, May 9, we organized an online meeting in which we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Vlachos and online Dr. Manolis Georgoulis, Director of Research at the Astronomy and Applied Mathematics Research Center of the Academy of Athens. During this meeting, the students presented the results of their work, the reasons that led them to the specific choices, there were questions asked by the teachers, highlights and explanations were given to certain points of the students' presentation and a discussion was held on whether someone could become a professional in space missions on the new horizons that arise with the shift of scientific interest to space.
It was an unprecedented experience for our students and definitely a constructive one!
We sincerely thank Dr. Vlachos, who supported our efforts throughout the school year as well as Dr. Georgoulis for his participation during the presentation of the students' final works. We are particularly happy about the partnership between higher, secondary education and institutions, as through this collaboration our students gain stimuli, motivation for further study in the field of STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) and a new targeting towards their career path.
